Lincoln County School District received a grant to seismically retrofit the concrete gymnasium and adjacent locker rooms at Toledo High School through the State of Oregon’s SRGP. Located near the Oregon coast, the building had significant deficiencies related to a wood framed end wall and failing bow-string trusses. Replacement of the bow-string trusses solved the roof failure problem; however, additional work was necessary to strengthen the wood end wall that was installed to allow for future expansion. In order to economically strengthen the wall line, ZCS worked with the contractor to develop a structural steel braced frame system that supported the roof system. Helical anchors were used to support the large loads from the frame without disturbing the existing building foundations. The result was a new north wall of the gymnasium that can withstand earthquake forces, and a stable structural roof system.
