Teaming with DLR Group, ZCS lead the seismic rehabilitation of Pelican Court, originally built in 1937. The multi-story concrete & steel gymnasium held historical importance to the community and it was important to cause minimal impact to the exterior façade of the building while making the necessary improvements. To do this, ZCS designed a retrofit using steel moment frames and rehabilitated the existing tied-arch rib roof structure with steel horizontal x-bracing (in-lieu of diaphragm roof sheathing). These solutions not only maintained the feel of the original gym, but also saved the client over $300,000.
As part of the bond funded improvements to the campus, ZCS worked with DLR to facilitate structural changes associated with renovations to update the building. The original orchestra seating, enclosed in a previous remodel, was opened to make a concessions area with second floor seating above the court and the existing wood floors and bleachers were kept and re-finished. Additionally, locker rooms were modernized and relocated to a new space.
