Victor Point Elementary School’s seismic retrofit, funded by the state Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program, consisted of improving multiple CMU structures with new strong-backs, shear walls, ceiling diaphragms, and in-plane and out-of-plane top of wall connections to provide a reliable lateral load path. A challenge on this project, as is common with many SRGP projects, was to keep the existing roofing and built-in casework intact while making the adequate improvements. As a result of these improvements the ceiling was strengthened to act as a diaphragm and equipped with new lighting & finishes and new exterior walls were constructed with new siding & paint. This simultaneously gave the building an aesthetic ‘face-lift’ while satisfying the seismic grant scope of work.
